The BET documentary “SMOKE,” executive produced and narrated by Nasir “NAS” Jones, will be released on November 18th. The documentary features B-Real of Cypress Hill, Senator Kamala Harris, music artist Ty Dolla $ign, son of Notorious B.I.G. & Faith Evans, C.J. Wallace, Senator Corey Booker, Former NBA player Al Harrington, WNBA star Cheyenne Parker, former NFL star Ricky Williams, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, Cook County, Illinois State’s Attorney Kim Foxx, Representative Barbara Lee, and more.
“SMOKE” traces the fascinating and complex legacy of Marijuana in the Black community. From its early use by Jazz musicians to the embrace of the most popular hip-hop artists of today, marijuana has always been a part of popular culture. But America’s unjust war on drugs systematically targeted marijuana use in the Black community, resulting in racially disproportionate numbers of arrests and convictions.
“SMOKE” also dives into the controversy and stories of brave African American athletes, including former NFL star Ricky Williams, and WNBA star Cheyenne Parker, who have risked their careers by openly embracing their use of Cannabis. With the recent news this week about marijuana legalization passing in 5 states, this documentary is so timely.
