You’ve all heard the saying, “it was like taking candy from a baby.” But in Hulu’s five-night event, premiering on May 9, Candy Montgomery (played by Jessica Biel) is a perfect 1980s housewife with two kids, a handsome husband (Timothy Simmons), and a lovely house. But when the pressure to conform builds, Candy’s the one doing the taking. The perfectly permed church-going woman begins an affair with someone else’s husband. And when her quest for freedom is discovered, someone ends up dead. Specifically, Betty Gore (Melanie Lynskey), wife to Allan Gore (Pablo Schreiber), is murdered by someone who swung an ax 41 times. When the affair is disclosed to law enforcement, suspicion falls on Candy. Did she take more than just someone’s husband?
This isn’t only a fictional scenario made up to enrapture audiences. The entire series is based on true events that happened in the country town of Wylie, Texas, in 1980.
Three-time Emmy nominee Robin Veith wrote the pilot script and executive produced Candy, and the cast is an all-star team. I had the privilege of sitting down with Jessica Biel (“7th Heaven,” “The Illusionist”), Melanie Lynskey (“Two and a Half Men”), Timothy Simons (“Veep”), and Pablo Schreiber (“Orange is the New Black”) to chat about their upcoming mini-series. We talked about the story, what it was like to work together, and the cast’s visual transition from 2022 back to 1980– Jessica Biel’s close-cropped perm and thick-rimmed glasses render her almost unrecognizable.
If you haven’t subscribed to Hulu yet, now’s the time! Candy will be the show everyone’s talking about, and you don’t want to miss out! I chatted with Jessica & Melanie about these complex characters. Press play to watch!
